CWIA Update - 30th April 2006 (YWG - our meeting is this Wednesday! See you there!) WE'RE NUMBER ONE! Hey, guess which chapter of Women in Aviation International has the most members? I'll give you a hint - it's hot & muggy in the summer, and it's where you can buy your CANADIAN women in aviation T-shirts and licence plate holders! Yup - that's right, Upper Canada Chapter in Toronto is the largest chapter in the WAI in the world! And here's a note of thanks from the Toronto chapter executive: 'Thank you to all of the members that continue to support our chapter, especially those who have recruited new members! Everyone's participation increases the networking, learning and fun experiences. Keep up the great work!' ....and speaking of WAI chapter events, what's in it for me? WHY GO TO MEETINGS? WAI chapter meetings are a fun way to find out what's new in your local aviation scene. Meetings of the Women in Aviation in Canada usually combine aviation information with great networking opportunities. At the meetings you’ll have the opportunity to speak with women already established in the careers of Airline Pilot, FSS Specialist, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, Air Traffic Control, Flight Attendant, Aviation Management, and more, as well as students learning to fly, and those just taking the first steps in looking into an aviation career. MEMBER PROFILE - Update from Raelene Crowe, new NavCanada employee in training! Received this update from teh Winnipeg chapter - great to hear of how training is going for Raelene: 'Only 3 weeks to go!! I've been at The Nav Canada Training Institute since Jan 3rd. There are 12 people in my class from all over the country. The course is great. The course began with long days of classroom time and study in the evening. Then we began in the simulator. There are two types of simulators that we use here. The 180 degree sim and the 360 degree sim. The 360 is really neat, after you enter the sim the screen closes behind you and you have a full circular view. I'm in the 360 tomorrow morning, its supposed to be a busy run. The pace just recently jumped up another level because we are getting close to the end. I did a 3 hour exam today. It seemed never ending, it was 49 pages long. We'll find out our results tomorrow. All I do is study and worry about the next test or the next simulator evaluation, but hopefully it will all pay off in the end. I'm really looking forward to starting the job. We will find out the list of available towers in two weeks, I'd love to go to Manitoba or Newfoundland but of course I will be happy anywhere they send me. I still have one more test and one simulator evaluation to pass before I finish here. Wish me luck! Missing Winnipeg, hope everyone is well. I read the WAI emails to keep up to date. I'd love to continue to participate where ever I end up. Bye! Rae' That's great Raelene! Good luck, and let us know where you'll be working....we'll fly by and say 'Hello'! MEMBER UPDATE - from Vanessa Colombo in Club Med! Vanessa (from Vancouver) has been working as a GO (the staffers dealing with the customers all day!) for a few months now - let's check in with her on how it's going: 'Hey Guys !!! Greetings from the beautiful world of sun and sand here on the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. Can’t believe it’s already been four months since I got here, time has just flown by. Been busy working crazy shifts in a short staffed reception department and was lucky enough to get a visitor for two weeks last months. My cousin, Irene, came all the way from Zurich Switzerland to visit me and of course play in the sun and party too. I’ve managed to learn a few things in my time here. For example, to get by on minimal sleep (I’m a GO - need I say more!), work under the influence of alcohol (boss brings us drinks whenever we work the evening shift), hold my tongue (see paragraph below), drive on the left side of the road (after all I can fly from the right seat I should be able to drive from it too, right?) just to name a few. How I learned to hold my tongue. The food here’s super good and I eat way too much of it. Yes I have managed to gain some weight, I may just need to be rolled off the plane. Since we get spoiled with really good food it’s really hard not to say something when all of a sudden something doesn’t meet my standards. Well for me it was the sushi, after all I’m from Vancouver and spoiled with great sushi restaurants, so I said something. Boy did I learn my lesson to just keep my big mouth shut, the next Saturday morning you could find me spending 3.5 hours in the kitchen helping with the sushi! As though there’s not enough work in reception (which I like to call the complaints department). But I’m happy to report that week the sushi tasted much better. I guess my time in the Bahamas has been well spent, other than driving on the “wrong” side of the road which I’m very good at now I’ve also had the chance to benefit from the activities offered at the Club. I’ve had a chance to give scuba diving a try and although it’s fun to swim with the fishes I must say I haven’t fallen in love with the activity. This past week I’ve started windsurfing and like it quite a bit, I guess I prefer to stay on the water rather than disappear under it - but really who can blame me when the weather is so nice. And being that this is Club Med, of course I’ve been doing some partying too, with some great new friends. It’s no wonder I’m so tired and, as Sprit of the West put it, need “Home for a Rest”. Although I’m really looking forward to getting back home to go kayaking, there’s absolutely no whitewater or rivers around here, it’s going to be hard to give up having this beautiful blue water in my backyard. Best Wishes, Vanessa' What a great opportunity, glad to hear you're enjoying it so much. And you're one of those rare Canadians who has a really good tan this time of year! Contact at TearaFraser@hotmail.com HUMOUR IN UNIFORM: Lots of military pilot jokes out there, but how about a Navigator one?! The pilot was sitting in his seat and pulled out a .38 revolver. He placed it on top of the instrument panel, and then asked the navigator, 'Do you know what I use this for?' The navigator replied, 'No, what's it for?' The pilot responded, 'I use this on navigators who get me lost!' The navigator proceeded to pull out a .45 and place it on his chart table. The pilot asked, 'What's that for?' 'Well, to be honest,' the navigator replied, 'I'll know we're lost before you will.'
