MEMBER UPDATE: And congratulations to Taraneh Nasooti from BC - she has been hired by Kelowna Flightcraft air Charters as second officer to fly the B727 out of Halifax! She's just finishing her training, and here's an update from her: 'Ground school was a lot of fun... me and eight guys! On our first day after receiving our employee id cards we went to class only to be thrown into electrical systems! What a subject to start off with! Two and half weeks later we were all done with GS and I was one of the lucky two to start sim training right away with only one weekend to relax. I was very nervous the first day and actually it was without reason. The day went by like a breeze as it was a familiarization of all the fancy knobs, lights, and switches. Simulator training was so much less stressful than I had anticipated. Don’t get me wrong, we did all kinds of fun and crazy things such as rapid depressurization, emergency descent, engine failures (we practices at least three or four each day!!), loss of all generators (so loss of electrical power which leads to no lights, no instruments, nothing), loss of hydraulic pressure, … All kinds of cool tricks! I finished sim training successfully and started my line indoc on Monday night in Hamilton. My first pairing was Hamilton-Winnipeg-Calgary (layover) and then back to Winnipeg-Hamilton. It was so much fun sitting in my seat and doing what I want to do. It definitely feels awesome being my own strong individual again! My check trainer is a really cool person who has just been upgraded to first officer. I am her last trainee before she goes in for training… So far she says I am doing great! It definitely helps the confidence to hear that! There has been no time for anything else as this job has not only made my day, week, month, year but also a new chapter of my life. I am so happy! Feeling the way I have been recently has made me realize how important it is to follow your dreams and to do what one loves! Please if you are not happy where you’re at in life, know that only YOU can change it to something better. If you are where you want to be then you are a very lucky person!!! Thanks so much for everyone's encouragement in the past… Taraneh' Great to hear from you Taraneh - congratulations, and good luck! Keep us updated. ANOTHER PROMOTION: And here's an update from Juanita who is a member of our newest group of Women in Aviation in the Edmonton Area: 'I was promoted to the Chief Pilot position at Little Red Air Service in the new year. It's hard to believe that it has almost been a year already!! I am loving this new challenge of being in management. It is certainly different than being a line pilot - there's always lots to do. I was the only Captain in Fort Vermilion all spring and summer. That really increased my workload!! Although, I'm not complaining; I love to be busy. And I can certainly say that I have not been bored!!! Plus the benefit of being the only Captain is that I did all the king air flying in the Fort. That really added to my multi-turbine PIC time!! But alas, the monopoly is over and we are fully crewed in Fort Vermilion. My favourite thing about being the chief pilot is being responsible for the company training program. I have really enjoyed training people on the Kingair. I have been able to draw from all my instructor experiences and I think this benefits the company and the pilots. And it's really exciting to fly with people who are getting to fly the Kingair for the first time. Their enthusiasm is fantastic!! I also made a bit of Little Red Air history this summer. I hired a female co- pilot. And for the first time in Little Red Air's 20 year history, an all female crew flew a Medevac flight. Cool. All in all, I would have to say that I've had a great summer of learning and flying. Take Care and Fly Safe, Juanita' Thanks for sharing that with us Juanita! IN EDMONTON ON OCTOBER 13 - 15, 2006?
