THE GAUGE THAT LIES Really good article (meaning: informative with a slight sense of humour) for anyone planning to fly an aircraft over 10,000 feet. Sure, we know that our Airspeed Indicator shows a velocity different than True Airspeed (TAS), and there are ways to calculate it. But how does that affect VNE (Velocity of Never Exceed - or the fastest your aircraft can go), and ultimately could you unwittingly causing damage to your aircraft? The article centers around a really cool line of homebuilt aircraft (RVs - awesome and fast!) but there are lessons in there for every pilot. All you Flight Instructors - here's another great reasource for your advanced students. Have a look. http://www.vansaircraft.com/pdf/hp_limts.pdf MEMBER UPDATES Congratulations to Raeleen Ranger - Raeleen is now an accomplished First Officer on the Shorts 360 with Pacific Coastal Aviation based in YVR! Way to go! Terrific news from Vanessa Griffiths, also out of YVR, but now will be out of Calgary! 'Hi everyone, I just got a job with Sunwest Aviation on a Metro 23 as a first officer! I am very happy with this as I was getting very tired of 703 operations at Vancouver's South side. It has been a hard year for a lot of us on the South side with losing so many good friends and coworkers. I am looking forward to actually getting to some meetings in Calgary because it looks like I might have a schedule now that gives me time to have a social life! Take care, Vanessa' Congratulations Vanessa - keep us posted! Teara Fraser, Vancouver, is currently working for a few months in Nigeria! Here are some excerpts from a recent email: 'Here I am in Lagos, Nigeria.... Things are very different here, but I am enjoying myself. My job is very challenging but equally rewarding. I am working with Arik Air of Nigeria. Arik has purchased 3 new CRJ-900's from Bombardier and plans to commence passenger service right away. I am here as part of Bombardier's service delivery contract as a consultant to assist them in developing a international standard operations center. The people here are lovely and I have already grown attached to many of the locals. I was measured the other day for a danshiki (sp?) which is the traditional garment. I chose however for them to make me on that is a boy one, kinda like pajamas. I stay at the nicest hotel (the Sheraton) and still the water is kinda yellow/brown and you see the occasional rat scurrying around the restaurant. Interesting! Teara' Send Teara an email at tearafraser@hotmail.com CHAPTER ACTIVITY What is your chapter up to? One small, but VERY rewarding outing to do as a chapter, is talk to young folks about aviation careers, to let them know of the great possibilities! Most of us remember a time when we were young, that if asked what career we wanted when we grew up, 'ME, Pilot, Air Traffic Controller, or Airline Management' would not have come to mind! Help them realize they can work AND have fun! Here's a note the Toronto chapter sent out: 'THANK YOU A huge thank you to Lora Yowell who coordinated today's Girl Guide aviation day. Toronto WAI members Lisa Graham, Asti Livingston, Linda Stericker, Suzanne Hart and Lora Yowell were joined by members of the 99's and students and instructors from Seneca College assisted 42 Girl Guides to successfully complete their Aeronautics badge. Seneca College generously allowed our group to use their aircraft, hangar and classroom to expand the Guides aviation knowledge. The event was so popular that there is already a list of 25 Guides who are eagerly awaiting the next aeronautics badge opportunity. We are tentatively planning to run the event again early in 2007, more details will be available as the date approaches. Thank you to everyone who participated.' For thos of us who have done these sessions before - you know how much fun it is to share your passion with young bright Canadians. It's easy, and it feels good. I bet there's a Guide troop or career counsellor at a nearby school, who would love to receive your call! JOBS Have you seen the new Career Board on the CWIA website? There are 10 jobs posted there right now - check it out! Go to www.cwia.ca and click on 'Careers' on the left side. Also - if you're interested in working at YVR for the Airport Authority, there are 11 jobs posted there! If the job posting is still up, I've been told it means they are still accepting resumes for that job. Some of the postings I've added to our CWIA career board, but the ones on the www.yvr.ca website include everything from Electrician to Aircraft Noise Specialist! Go to the website, and on the left click on 'Airport Authority', then click on the heading 'Careers' on that list. EDMONTON Women In Aviation in Edmonton Prospective Chapter Polaris Chapter http://groups.msn.com/Polaris-CWIA/ There is so much potential for having a very active group in the Edmonton area - there are already quite few women who are WAI members, and there are almost enough to start a Chapter in Edmonton. Please come out with your suggestions and spread the word to other women involved in aviation in the Edmonton area. Remember they do not have to be pilots so tell them about the meetings. CALGARY The Rocky Mountain High Chapter - Calgary SOCIAL HOUR In order to increase the value of membership in our local chapter, we want to create more opportunities for networking amongst our members. One of the ways we are trying to do this is by introducing a 'Social Hour' before our monthly meetings. Join us for dinner and/or drinks at the Sky Harbour Lounge in the Port 'O Call Inn at 6pm on the third Wednesday of every month. At 7pm, we meet at the Calgary Aero Space Museum for the business meeting. For more information please contact rmhexecutive@hotmail.com. Check out our new BLOG at www.rockymountainhighchapter.blogspot.com JOKE OF THE DAY OK - normally we stick with aviation humour, and avoid any kind of man/woman jokes, but this one got a belly laugh, and I don't think it's offensive, so here it is! Never Argue with a Woman One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, and reads her book. Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?' 'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?') 'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her. 'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing - I'm reading.' 'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.' 'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with assault,' says the woman. 'But I haven't even touched you!” says the game warden. 'That's true but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.' 'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.
